Handling the Holidays
While the holidays are traditionally a festive and happy time of the year, for those of us who have lost a loved one, they can be very challenging.
The St. James Chapel and St. James N.E.S.T. are co-sponsoring an event in November entitled “Handling the Holidays,” a two-hour session led by Father Bill Eberle, St. James resident and leading expert in the field of grief support.
It will be held at the St. James Community Center on Thursday, November 14th at 2:00 PM, and is open to all residents of St. James and their friends. No reservations are necessary.
It doesn't matter how recent or long ago your loved one has died, you will find help at this workshop.
A SPECIAL EVENING OF CHRISTMAS MUSIC
DECEMBER 20, 2023
On December 20, 2023 a special evening of Christmas music, performed by the Treble Makers, was held at the St. James Chapel to a standing room only crowd. Over 140 people enjoyed festive luminaria lighting their way into the Chapel where this talented St. James quartet put us in the Christmas spirit with performances of specially arranged Christmas songs as well as leading us in singing traditional carols. It was concluded outside in the Chapel Gardens where we held lighted candles as we sang 'Silent Night.'
A goodwill offering was held to benefit Southport Oak Island Interchurch Fellowship (SOIICF) and over $1100 was given to the non-profit which helps to meet short term human needs of food and financial aid. If you would like to donate to SOIICF, please mail a check to SOIICF, PO Box 711, Oak Island, 28465.

ST. JAMES PLANTATION CHAPEL MEMBERS JOIN THE 39TH ANNUAL SOUTHPORT/OAK ISLAND INTERCHURCH FELLOWSHIP WALK (SOIICF)
St. James Plantation Chapel members joined the 39th Annual Southport/Oak Island Interchurch Fellowship Walk (SOIICF) which was held on October 22, 2023 at Franklin Square Park in Southport. The 3-Mile Walk began and ended at Franklin Park, passing seven of our member churches.
Over the prior 39 years of Walks, over $350,000 has been raised to support human needs in our community. Rental payments, water and electric bill assistance, and food insecurity are a few areas of ongoing need. Additionally, we donate 25% of the funds raised to Church World Service, a world-wide ministry helping people fight hunger and meet other needs.

WWII VETERAN CELEBRATED AT ST. JAMES CHAPEL - August 11, 2023
In the Cottage Lakes neighborhood of St. James, Vincent Simonetti, a 98-year-old Navy veteran of World War II, was a unifying force. His warm-hearted, outgoing personality helped to make him a welcome symbol of his generation – the “Greatest Generation” – and a treasured friend to many in this community. When he passed away recently, his funeral and burial took place in New Jersey where he lived and worked for much of his life before moving to St James, but his friends here wanted to do something special to celebrate his life.
A group of neighbors worked with the St. James Chapel to purchase a brick in our Commemorative Garden and then put together a short but beautiful ceremony to both dedicate Vincent’s brick and celebrate his life. Bagpipe music opened and closed the proceedings, and in between, musically talented neighbors shared modern songs which evoked kind thoughts and memories of a good man and a life well-lived.
